Infant Diet

Wondering what to feed your baby and your mom isn’t around? Your baby is a couple of weeks old now and you have no idea if he has to be fed with solid food already. It’s not that complicated. Here is a diet guide for your little one.

Each baby is distinct. You just have to understand that there are different variety of food, and so each has to be alloted with a unique diet.

Breastfeed milk is the only thing your four-month-old baby needs. He is not to be fed with solid food until that age. A visit to your baby’s pediatrician is best just to make sure.

Solids can already be introduced by the time he reaches an age between 4-6 months in addition to the breast milk feed. Breast milk or infant formula is primary needed for his growth and metabolism.

Mother’s milk is free of contamination and supplies the complete nutrients the baby requires. Infants need Vitamins C and D to remain healthy and these are subtances present in breast milk..

Breast feeding or nipple fis done every 2 to 4 hours per day if your baby is below 4 months old. Then after, breast feeding can be done every 4 to 6 hours per day. The older he gets, the decrease in number of feedings and an increase in milk quantity is observed.

If you are not breast feeding, an iron-fortified infant milk is an alternative, bottle feeding is fine. Supplements for breast feeding such as hypoallergenic infant formulas is still proven unsafe, prescription of such products are still questionable.

The following food can be tried, however, to ensure the safe feed, secure an advice from a health care professional or your doctor. It can be an alternative substitue for breastmilk.

  1. Cereal stuffs like Cerelac, rice-based nutritious cereal for easy digestion. It needs to be mixed with warm water. The mixture should be in thin consistency. You can increase the amount gradually.
  2. Ripe and mashed apple, banana and avocado. Other fruits like cooked apple, mango, pear and peaches amay also be given.

3. Mashed and pureed vegetables soup like pumpkin, carrot and potato.
     
4. Until the baby reaches 6 months old, no fish, meat and chicken should you feed. Do not feed him eggs or cow’s milk yet until he reaches 8 and 12 respectively. Cow’s milk feeding is a dangerous approach.

Remember that what is harmful for the mother’s health is a lot more harmful for the the baby. Such drug intakes, smoking, and drinking must be avoided and is prohibited especially when breast feeding.

Adult foods or beverages must definitely not to be given. The baby’s drinking water should be distilled, just to ensure that it is totally safe, clear and clean. Sugar, honey and syrup must not be fed yet. Honey can cause food poisoning or botulism to the baby.

Always take precautions. Read and check on everything the baby needs.
